What is this site about?

Imagine that we have just seen a movie, together, and that afterward we are stopping by a café, to exchange thoughts, impressions and feelings about it, over a cup of something. This is what this site is essentially about; as the name and tagline suggest, this is an opportunity to share thoughts and impressions about movies – and, in general, about various aspects of the art form of film, as such (from movies and TV series, to the language of film, to our habits as viewers etc.).

So, please feel free to join in the conversation, and to share your own thoughts, by leaving comments on these posts. Or, if you would like to contribute to this website, please contact its editor (see Contact link on the homepage).

Are these “reviews”? Do they contain spoilers?

The discussions posted on this website are not intended as movie reviews, per se. As explained above, each of them is an opportunity to talk about a movie, after “we have seen it”. As such, most of them will probably contain “spoilers”, as well; because – remember? – we have already seen the movie!

Moral quandaries

The story goes that Martin Luther once said that, “If your head is made of butter, you shouldn’t sleep by the fire.” At the same time, each of us has their own moral universe and inner compass, based on one’s own experiences, vulnerabilities, and habits of self-discipline; moreover, each person probably has their own perspective on the relationship between art and morality. For example, the view of this author is that morality in art has mostly to do with artistic integrity – with the integrity of the artistic act itself; that is, that things “get immoral” especially when they become self-serving, and are not integrally, genuinely part of the artistic act itself. Of course, this is all relative to the given situation, and to one’s own sensibilities – because what Martin Luther said remains applicable, still.

In consequence, the discussions posted on this website are not, and should not be used as, “moral” evaluations – but as artistic ones. Thus, even aspects that some people or other might find problematic will not be discussed, distinctly and separately – unless they are relevant and thus part of the artistic evaluation of the given film (according to this author’s perspective). Nonetheless, in order to help the general user to orient themselves, each discussion will contain, usually right at the beginning, a link to the “official rating” received by each movie (for purposes of parental guidance) – link that one can use according to one’s own purposes.
